Neuf Paysages is a whimsical and elegant portrayal of Dalínian landscapes created with great technical brilliance by the famous Spanish genius. Dalí spent every summer of his youth in Cadaqués, where his family had a house, and the young artist also often visited nearby Port Lligat, where he would later purchase a small fisherman’s hut with his wife, Gala. Each of the etchings in this series, done using the dry-point technique, illustrates a selection Dalí’s of favourite fantasmagorical images in combination with the landscapes which left such a lasting impression on him. One has the impression that Dalí is living out a surrealistic dream on the arid Catalan plain, with subjects such as “The Knight and the Rose”, “The Unicorn and the Maiden”, “The Maestro Pianist at the Melting Piano”. Further emphasising the ‘feel’ of these landscapes, the etchings were created in a sophisticated ochre, white and black design.
