L’Ésclave de Michelin depicts Dalí’s elaboration upon an idea belonging to classical art, which has been surrealistically disfigured by ironic and transgressive additions. Even within the title itself Dalí’s paradoxical intent is clear. The artist created this work in a rather simple way. He inserted a replica of a statuette by Michelangelo into two Michelin truck tires, one of which serves as a base while the other encircles the waist. This show of irreverence towards bourgeois cultural expectations contains within it the underlying theme that art and beauty, in some senses are enslaved by the mechanical and technological constraints of the modern world.
