There is probably no figure more appropriate to represent Spain than that of a
bullfighter. This is a classic example of a surrealistic artwork, assembled from
incongruous objects that take on a new meaning when placed together. But this
statue is designed with the intention of causing hallucinations, as the viewer turns
away from it and finds he cannot forget this image. The face is hidden in the bell of a
trumpet that rises from the shoulders in an unnatural elongation. The instrument can
produce no music; it can serve only to imprison the bullfighter.
